Rising just south of Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai—known to the Maasai and Sonjo as the sacred “Mountain of God”—is one of the most unique volcanoes on Earth, famous for its rare natrocarbonatite lava. This adventure begins with an early departure from Arusha or Karatu and a scenic drive to the Lake Natron area. Upon arrival, spend the day exploring the region with a local Maasai guide, walking along the shores of the lake where thousands of flamingos gather, wildlife roams freely, and the landscape feels truly otherworldly. The day also includes a visit to an ancient archaeological site with preserved human footprints and a hike to a nearby waterfall, where you can cool off with a refreshing swim before returning to your lodge or campsite.

After dinner and some rest, the main challenge begins late at night with a midnight ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai. The steep 5–6 hour climb is demanding but deeply rewarding, leading you to the summit at sunrise. From the top, take in sweeping views of the crater and surrounding Rift Valley, and on active days, witness molten black lava glowing against the early morning light. The descent takes 3–4 hours, followed by time to rest before returning to Arusha or Karatu.
