Mount Kilimanjaro: 5-6 Day Marangu Route
Climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route in 5–6 days, summit on Day 4, and descend comfortably with hut stays and a built-in flex day if needed.
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the classic Marangu Route in 5–6 days offers a direct and comfortable path to Africa’s highest peak. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only route featuring hut accommodations instead of camping, providing dormitory-style lodging along the way. The ascent and descent follow the same trail, making it a straightforward and well-established option. Summit day takes place on Day 4, with return to the gate on Day 5. A 6th day is built in as a contingency day should the group require a slower pace due to altitude, weather, or overall wellbeing.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
After registration at Marangu Gate, trek through lush rainforest filled with towering trees and blue monkeys. Arrive at Mandara Hut for your first overnight stay in mountain cabins.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the forest behind and ascend into heath and moorland. Enjoy expansive views and, on clear days, glimpses of Mawenzi Peak. Overnight at Horombo Hut.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Continue steadily upward across alpine desert terrain toward Kibo Hut. The landscape becomes stark and dramatic as you prepare for summit night. Rest early in preparation for the midnight ascent.
Day 4: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descend to Horombo Hut
Begin your summit attempt around midnight, climbing slowly to Gilman’s Point at sunrise before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Horombo Hut for the night.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (Descent & Exit)
Descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and return to town.
Day 6 (Contingency / Flex Day)
This additional day is reserved in case the group needs extra acclimatization time at Horombo Hut or a slower pace due to weather or altitude considerations. If not required, the climb is completed in 5 days.
The Marangu Route offers a classic Kilimanjaro experience with hut accommodations, a direct ascent profile, and a structured summit and return schedule designed for both comfort and achievement.
