Mount Kilimanjaro: 6-7 Day Machame Route
Summit Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route in 6–7 days, reaching Uhuru Peak on Day 5 and descending safely with a flexible buffer day if needed.
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the popular and scenic Machame Route in 6–7 days offers a dynamic and rewarding path to Africa’s highest peak. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, varied terrain, and strong acclimatization profile using the “climb high, sleep low” approach. This itinerary places summit day on Day 5, with a full descent to the gate on Day 6. A 7th day is built in as a contingency day if the group needs to move at a slower pace due to altitude, weather, or overall wellbeing.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After registration at Machame Gate, trek through lush rainforest filled with giant ferns and colobus monkeys. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Climb out of the forest into moorland and onto the Shira Plateau. The terrain becomes more rugged, with expansive views of Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)
Ascend toward Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp. This critical acclimatization day improves summit success while showcasing dramatic alpine desert scenery.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (via Karanga Camp)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, then traverse ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp before continuing upward to Barafu Camp. Rest and prepare for the summit push.
Day 5: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Descend to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, begin the summit ascent under the stars. Reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend past Barafu and continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (Descent & Exit)
Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to town.
Day 7 (Contingency / Flex Day)
This extra day is reserved in case the group needs to slow the ascent for acclimatization or adjust plans due to weather conditions. If unused, the climb is completed in 6 days.
The Machame Route combines breathtaking scenery, excellent acclimatization, and a rewarding summit schedule—making it one of the most popular and successful ways to summit and return from Kilimanjaro.
