Mount Kilimanjaro: 7-8 Day Lemosho Route

7 days

Demanding

Climb Kilimanjaro via the scenic Lemosho Route in 7–8 days, summit on Day 6, and descend safely with built-in flexibility for acclimatization and weather.

Summiting Mount Kilimanjaro via the breathtaking Lemosho Route in 7–8 days is one of the most scenic, rewarding, and strategically paced ways to reach the Roof of Africa. Approaching from the remote western side of the mountain, the Lemosho Route offers quieter trails at the start, dramatic landscape transitions, and excellent acclimatization through its gradual ascent profile. Climbers journey through five distinct ecological zones—lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone—experiencing an incredible diversity of scenery along the way.

This itinerary is designed with summit success and safety in mind, placing the summit attempt on Day 6 while ensuring proper acclimatization in the preceding days. The descent is carefully structured to allow recovery after summit night while safely returning to lower elevations. An 8th day is built in as a contingency option, providing flexibility if the group needs to slow the pace due to altitude, weather conditions, or overall wellbeing. This balance of preparation, challenge, and flexibility makes the Lemosho Route one of the most respected and successful Kilimanjaro itineraries.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

After registration, trek through lush rainforest filled with towering trees and colobus monkeys. Overnight at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Climb out of the forest into heath and moorland, ascending onto the expansive Shira Plateau with sweeping views.

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

Cross the plateau beneath Kibo Peak at a steady pace, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.

Day 4: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

Ascend toward Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp. This key “climb high, sleep low” day greatly improves acclimatization.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (via Karanga Camp)

Climb the famous Barranco Wall, traverse alpine ridges, pass through Karanga Camp, and continue upward to Barafu Camp. After an early dinner, rest before the midnight summit attempt.

Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Descend to Mweka Camp

Begin your summit push around midnight under a sky filled with stars. Reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Barafu briefly and continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (Descent & Exit)

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate, and transfer back to town.

Day 8 (Contingency / Flex Day)

This extra day is reserved in case the group needs to move at a slower pace during the ascent, add acclimatization time, or adjust plans due to weather. If unused, the climb is completed in 7 days.

The Lemosho Route offers one of the most scenic and successful ways to summit and descend Kilimanjaro, combining gradual acclimatization, dramatic landscapes, and the flexibility needed for a safe and deeply rewarding mountain experience.
