Ol Doinyo Lengai Overnight Hike
Climb the sacred Ol Doinyo Lengai on a thrilling overnight trek, ascending under the stars and reaching the summit at sunrise with breathtaking views of the Rift Valley.
Ol Doinyo Lengai stands as a sacred landmark above the Lake Natron basin, revered by local communities and unlike any other volcano in the world due to its rare, fast-cooling black lava. This itinerary is ideal for travelers who want to conserve their energy and focus fully on the summit experience. After an early departure from Arusha or Karatu, arrive at the lodge or campsite near Lake Natron and spend the day resting, hydrating, and taking in the dramatic scenery of the surrounding volcanic landscapes.
Late in the evening, you’ll travel to the base of the mountain to begin the overnight trek. The challenging climb starts around midnight and takes approximately 5–6 hours, ascending steep volcanic slopes under the stars. Reaching the summit at sunrise, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views into the crater and across the Rift Valley, with the possibility of seeing active lava flows on certain days. After a careful 3–4 hour descent, you’ll return to camp to rest before the journey back to Arusha or Karatu.
