Lake Chala is a breathtaking volcanic crater lake perched on the border between Tanzania and Kenya, just east of Mount Kilimanjaro. Formed roughly 250,000 years ago, this stunning turquoise lake is fed almost entirely by pure groundwater flowing from rainfall in Kilimanjaro’s lush montane forests. Its waters are so unique that they are home to the Lake Chala tilapia—an endangered fish species found nowhere else on Earth.
During your visit, you’ll have the chance to hike to the famous border rock, where you can stand with one foot in Tanzania and the other in Kenya while overlooking the dramatic crater walls and shimmering lake below. The hike takes approximately 2–3 hours and offers incredible photo opportunities.
For those looking to get even closer to the water, kayaking is available, allowing you to glide across the peaceful crater lake surrounded by towering cliffs and untouched nature. Camping and lodging options at Lake Chala are also coming soon, making it an even more inviting destination for overnight adventurers.
Lake Chala can also be added as an extension to your Chagga Village Overnight Trip for an unforgettable cultural and natural experience.
