Summiting Mount Meru is an unforgettable 3–4 day trekking experience that combines dramatic landscapes, rich wildlife, and sweeping views, making it one of Tanzania’s most rewarding climbs. At 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in the country and stands as a striking volcanic peak within Arusha National Park. Often overshadowed by nearby Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a quieter, more immersive adventure with fewer climbers and a stronger sense of connection to the natural environment.
The trek ascends through a remarkable variety of ecosystems, beginning in lush montane forest where trekkers may encounter giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, colobus monkeys, and a wide range of birdlife. As you gain elevation, the landscape transitions into heath and moorland zones, with open views, volcanic rock formations, and cooler alpine air. The mountain itself is an active stratovolcano, featuring a massive horseshoe-shaped crater formed by a historic eruption, adding to its dramatic character.
Acclimatization is well-paced over the 3–4 days, making Mount Meru an excellent standalone climb or a preparatory trek for Mount Kilimanjaro. The summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning, following a narrow ridge with steep drop-offs on either side. Reaching the summit at sunrise rewards climbers with breathtaking panoramic views over the Great Rift Valley and, on clear days, an awe-inspiring sight of Mount Kilimanjaro rising in the distance. Challenging yet accessible, summiting Mount Meru offers a perfect balance of adventure, scenery, and wildlife in one extraordinary mountain experience.
